This week, at Conservative Party Conference, Mr Bradley met with representatives from Guide Dogs to discuss supporting young people with visual impairments, and what more could be done both nationally and at Council level to help with more suitable employment opportunities. The Mansfield MP, who is also Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, is keen to utilise both roles in order to better support people with visual impairments.
Mr Bradley also discussed the Government’s Inclusive Transport Strategy, which commits to enhancing disability equality and awareness training for transport staff, better equipping them to safely and confidently assist those with mobility challenges, including for guide dog owners.
In 2018 the Department for Transport published an Inclusive Transport Strategy, which aims to see our transport system offering genuinely equal access for people with disabilities by 2030.
As part of delivering the strategy, the Government has committed to working with local authorities to improve street design and to ensure streetscapes are inclusive. This is in addition to guidance that the Department for Transport has issued for local authorities on street design, which advocates minimising street clutter.
Commenting, Ben Bradley MP said:
“Lovely to meet the guys on the Guide Dogs stand at conference this week - and the gorgeous dogs themselves of course - to learn a bit more about their work. I’m keen to support them in any way I can, and particularly enjoyed discussing what more could be done both nationally and at Council level to help provide young people with more suitable employment opportunities.
“Guide dogs campaigns regularly land in my inbox, so I know it’s a popular issue across Mansfield and Warsop. Campaigns include pavement parking and the danger of e-scooters on our streets. I’m looking forward to seeing what more I can do to support the blind and partially sighted members of our region”.
