Yesterday, Cllr Ben Bradley MP welcomed the measures outlined in the Borders Act coming into force. The Nationality and Borders Act, which passed in the last session of Parliament, seeks to strengthen the UK's borders and tackle the evil people-smuggling trade.
Within the bill there are a number of key provisions, such as increasing the maximum sentence for illegally entering the UK or overstaying a visa and new powers to help speed up the removal of dangerous foreign criminals. These are just two of the measures which will help to secure the UK's borders and crack down on abuses of the immigration system.
Immigration officers have also had their powers significantly increased when it comes to stopping and searching containers for illegal migrants. This shows how the bill is empowering border officers with the authority they need to keep our borders secure.
Cllr Ben Bradley MP was quoted as saying:
'I was really pleased to see the Nationality and Borders Act come into force yesterday. This was a vital piece of legislation when it comes to securing our borders.'
'Immigration is an issue that I get contacted about a lot by my constituents and I often share their frustrations with how our immigration system works. This bill now completely overhauls that system and helps to speed up the removal of foreign criminals, all things I know will be welcomed in Mansfield.'
'I look forward to seeing the powers outlined in this bill in action and I am excited to see the effect this will have in tackling illegal immigration.'
