Mansfield and Warsop Member of Parliament Ben Bradley has welcomed the Government’s major reforms to Child Benefit announced by the Chancellor during the Spring Budget.
The Chancellor announced that the Government will be raising the threshold for the high income charge so that nobody earning under £60,000 is subject to this charge. This means that 170,000 families will be taken out of paying this charge altogether with half a million families set to benefit with an average of £1300 next financial year.
During his Budget Speech, the Chancellor also tasked HMRC with collecting ‘household’ level data in order to end the unfairness of the current system. This unfairness emerges when two parents earning £49,000 would get full child benefit but a family with a single parent earning over £50,000 is subject to the charge.
Commenting, Ben Bradley stated:
‘Child Benefit reform is something that a number of people in Mansfield have contacted me about, particularly around the unfairness aspect where two parents could earn £49,000 and not pay the charge but parent earning £51,000 is subject to the charge. Fundamentally, this is wrong and I was really pleased to see the Chancellor take steps to address this.’
‘It was also really positive to see the threshold for the high income charge being raised so that nobody earning under £60,000 will pay the taper. This benefits nearly half a million families across the country, including many families in Mansfield.’
‘Combined with the other measures announced in the Spring Budget, such as the further reduction in National Insurance, there were a lot of positives in the Chancellor’s Budget and I look forward to Mansfield residents seeing this reflected in their pay packets.’
